Kitchen - sloping floor and building in appliances

Back in February I wrote that we'd make some changes to the kitchen that the previous owner left behind - I wanted to paint it over in white. Well - we didn't do that at all... We decided to do a major renovation in about two years' time: new flooring and ceiling, new windows (divided light windows) and a new kitchen. So all we did at the moment was to build in the appliances we had taken with us. And that really was a terrible job!

We bought a new countertop and had to make all of the cut-outs for the appliances at first. But the difficulties started only after that. Try to align the countertop horizontally when you have an extremly sloping floor - the spirit level almost drove us mad... We didn't really understand yet why the floor is sloping (apart from everything being a bit like that in an old house :), but we'll see what really happened when we'll do the flooring.

At least we caught a glimpse of the different layers of flooring after we riped out the old appliances. There is an old hard plaster flooring right at the bottom, followed by a parquet (approx. 30 years old) and the actual red cork flooring.

Here are some impressions of my father-in-law G. and his brother K.-H. working on it. K.-H. is an electrician, definitely a good profession to have in your family ;)

K.-H. also exchanged the fixing of some pipes - the old one existed of pages of a newspaper - of 1968!!! I actually wanted to take a picture of it, but my husband has immediately thrown it away because it had a - admittedly unpleasent - mice pee smell...

One more suprise waited for us: We don't have a three-phase current in our house!! Therefore, the oven had to be connected to a single-phase current... K.-H. told me I wouldn't be able to use all of the hotplates at the same time - of course I tried it immediately and so far we had no blown fuses :)

And this is one little detail I changed this weekend and which I really like: I sticked blackbord-film on one of the kitchen cabinets and plan to write the daily menu on it. It's the details that make you feel at home...
